Q: Does anyone have any tricks that they have used for installing the dust
seals and retaining ring for the disc brake caliper pistons.
A: I have done many, many of these. My best success comes from doing the following:
Scrupulously clean the retaining ring bore. Sanding and scraping. Lightly sand
or file the outer edge of the ring. There is usually some stamping flash. Install
main seal. Install piston coated with install lube or fluid completely into
the bore. Assemble dust seal into retaining ring. Gently work the assembly over
the piston. Now the tricky part. The best tool I've used or seen is an outer
bearing race. Part number is LM67010. VERY common. Go to a bearing shop or parts
store. Ask for CUP # LM67010. It is the outer race for all MGB, and big Healey
front wheel inner bearings. And it fits a gazzillion other cars. It is the perfect
diameter for this. Use the race to press in the retainer. I use a thin piece
of steel to even the load across the ring. Pay special attention to the relieved
area of the caliper casting. That is where the ring usually hangs up. Good luck.
PITA, isn't it. Best to have some practice. Hope this helps. ---Peter C
